In 1943, the service was made up of:

  • 39.5% Muslims
  • 32.25% Hindus
  • 24.5% Indian Christians and Anglo Indians
  • 3.75% miscellaneous
Ships of the RIN had served in the Second World War from Iceland to Australia and HMIS Bengal's encounter with two Japanese raiders 1,500 miles west of Fremantle was notable. Details can be found in the National Archives record (PRO) WO208/3816.
