The service records of RAF Indian Officers are in the National Archives series (PRO) AIR76. For example, the brief career of Indra Lal Roy, the RAF fighter pilot and the Indian Ace of the First World War, who was killed in action on 22 July 1918, is documented in (PRO) AIR76/488. The Indian Medical Service officer Bercut Nardin Khan, who was attached to the RAF in India and served in Iraq from 1926 to 1928, is in (PRO) AIR76/275.

The career of RAF officers from March 1919 can be traced in the Air Force List at the National Archives.

The Royal Indian Air Force List for 1941-46 is held at the British Library, Oriental and India Office collections (L/MIL/17/10/301-309), and a nominal index of personnel serving in India, 1919-39 is available in reference L/AG/26/12.

Airmen
The service records of RAF Indian airmen can be found in the National Archives series (PRO) AIR79. The series list to this is arranged in service number order. The National Archives holds the records of service of RAF airmen with service numbers up to 329,000.

The service numbers can be obtained from the nominal index of RAF airmen in (PRO) AIR78, which is also available on microfilm in the National Archives Microfilm Reading Room. The indexes cover the entrries of airmen who served in the Second World War and after. The (PRO)AIR 78/144 nominal index, for example, covers for the name range order Simmonds, E. to Slade, Ivor. This microfilm includes all the Singhs who served in the Second World War and after. It contains the following details:

  • Surname
  • First name or initials
  • Service number
  • Date of birth and, in some cases, date of enlistment
  • In some cases change of name detail by Deed Poll, such as former names
The National Archives does not hold the service records of airmen who went on to see service in the Second World War. These records are still retained by the RAF:
