* The Hong Kong Regiment

The regiment was raised at Jhelum in 1891 from native infantry in India and consisted of:

  • Four companies composed of Punjabi Mohammedans (Muslims from Punjab)
  • Two companies composed of Pathans (North West Frontiers)
  • Two companies composed of Hindustani Mohammedans (Indian Muslims).
One of the terms of service was that all previous service in India was counted as qualifying for a pension at the end of 21 years, but no officer or soldier was taken unless he engaged to serve for at least five years. The regiment was disbanded in 1909.

The embarkation and disembarkation returns for the Hong Kong regiment are in (PRO) WO25/3521-24 and (PRO) 3526 in the National Archives records. Casualty returns for the Hong Kong regiment are in (PRO) WO25/3469 covering the period 1850-1910.
