Native ratings who entered the Royal Navy service on or after 1 January 1904 became eligible under Order-in-Council (No. 246/AG), dated 2 November 1922, for the award of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal without Gratuity. Order-in-Council (No. 55 / A.G) dated 21 March 1924, sanctioned the award of gratuities in respect of long service, and on invaliding out for non-attributable causes. (ADM 1 / 8661 / 102).

Goans were presented or decorated with the 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory medals, which are documented in the National Archives record series (PRO) ADM 171, and their service records are in (PRO) ADM188.

A sample records is that of Petty Officer Steward (Goans G 360976). His service records are in ADM 188 / 550 and also contain a true copy of the certificate of service. Correspondence relating to the payment for gratuities and pension is in ADM 116/4534. He entered the Royal Navy in 1903, was wounded in the First World War and saw active service in East Africa. He was decorated with 1914/15 Star, British War and Victory medal, Africa General Service medal with clasps Somaliland 1920, and Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1927. This particular case confirms that the Goans were loyal and gave devoted service for which they were well known in the Royal Navy.
