Ministry of Labour files relating to the employment, welfare and training of colonial migrants can be found in the National Archives record series (PRO) LAB 8, (PRO)LAB 13 and (PRO) LAB26. These include many papers on Commonwealth migration and labour, such as reports and papers on the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962.

In particular, the medical profession in Britain had attracted many doctors from South Asia. The National Archives is not the place for records of doctors unless they were employed in the government service, such as in the army. The Medical Directory lists names and addresses from 1845.

From 1858, all doctors had to be registered, with details published in the annual Medical Register. The National Archives library has copies from 1895 to 1987 and 1915 to 1973 respectively. The National Archives reference (PRO) MH149/352-53 has statistics and correspondence on immigration of Commonwealth doctors for the period 1964-66.

It is also worth checking the record series (PRO) LAB42 as it may include details of doctors who immigrated to Britain under the voucher or work permit scheme.
