Burton quickly established himself in the local Jewish community, marrying
Sophia Marks in Worksop on 23 March 1909.
When, 25 years later the couple celebrated their silver wedding on the Empress of Britain at Shanghai, in his
travel diaries Burton would note the contrast between 'the interior of the tiny Town Hall in the Market Place, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, which had probably never been decorated since it left the hands of the builder half a century before, and a dining-room of the world's Luxury Liner!'
The couple first set up house at 26 Violet Bank Road, Sheffield, where their first child, Barbara was born, though they were soon to move on to Leeds as both the family, and the business, expanded.
