In the late 1930s, Sir Montague rented a large home, Kingsnympton Hall, at Kingston Hill, Surrey, to be nearer London. It was a place both to entertain friends and business contacts, and to work. After it was bombed, in the early years of the war, he bought Charters, a stunning modern country house at Sunninghill, Berkshire, close to a number of major golf courses.

When he died on 21 September 1952, however, it was in Leeds - at a dinner party for executives and managers of his company at the Great Northern Hotel, as he was speaking after the meal. The funeral was held at the Chapeltown Synagogue three days later.

Although business had drawn him increasingly to London, Burton had always cherished close links with the Harrogate Jewish community. He made strenuous efforts to acquire land there for a cemetery, although he was not to succeed in his own lifetime. He was therefore buried at Gildersome, in Leeds, as his wife was too, five years later. In 1964, however, a Jewish cemetery was opened at Stonefall, Harrogate, and Sir Montague and Lady Burton were re-interred there - the first burials.
