Sir Montague maintained a wide range of interests outside his business, as his public speeches attest.
He had been a Justice of the Peace since the 1930s. He was a leading supporter of international co-operation, backing the League of Nations and its successor, the United Nations. He was also a prominent and committed
Burton's Zionism and his love of literature combined in the enthusiasm he expressed for the poet Chaim Nachman Bialik in a speech to the Leeds Zionist Association in 1932.
As he grew older, he received welcome recognition of his literary interests. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries in 1940, was asked to join the PEN Club, and was awarded an honorary doctorate (DLitt) by the University of Leeds in 1944.
