Israel Zangwill, the novelist, was the greatest chronicler of London's Jewish East End. His candid portraits of immigrant life gave wider society a human insight into their lives. Zangwill was in a unique position to fulfill this role, both coming from a Jewish background and being very much a part of literary London in Edwardian England.
