For many young Jews, call-up was the spur to leaving the country, and Shimen-Leib was no exception. He emigrated to England, arriving in 1880.
In common with many new arrivals, Shimen-Leib anglicised his name, to Symon Freeman. He seems to have found his feet in the new country quite quickly. In April 1885, a leaflet, printed in English and
Yiddish, shows that Symon Freeman is staging 'A Dramatical Entertainment and Concert' at the Working Men's Mutual Relief and Educational Society. At a later date he published a collection of stories and poems in Yiddish.
