* Jack Kagan's Legacy

The photographs and film compiled by Harcavi have been researched, traced and collected by Jack Kagan, who was born in Novogrodek in 1929. Like all the Jews in Novogrodek, he and his family suffered terrible loss and tragedy under Nazi occupation. Jack was imprisoned in a labour camp, from where he and others organised a mass escape and joined the Bielskis, Russian Jewish *partisans hiding in the forests and fighting the Nazis. The only survivor of his immediate family, Jack settled in England after the war.

In recent years he has devoted much time to documenting Novogrodek's Jewish history, which had been largely ignored under the Soviets. Through this collection it is possible to imagine the life in the shtetl that so many Jews left behind them.
