After Austria was taken over by the Nazis and conditions for Jews deteriorated, Elsa tried to get herself and Grete out of the country. Tetamama had contact with a Christian English woman, Olive Rudkin, who willingly agreed to give Grete a home in England until her mother could join her.

As she now had a sponsor in England, Elsa was able to obtain a place for Grete on a *Kindertransport. Aged nine, Grete left Austria in April 1939. Elsa would never see her daughter again.
