Grete Glauber was born in May 1930, in Vienna, Austria. She was the illegitimate child of Elsa Glauber and Ioan Heller, but was brought up by her mother and had little to do with her father. Grete's childhood was happy. She had a loving relationship with her mother, and was very close to her mother's cousin - whom she knew as Uncle Willi - and one of her neighbours, a devout Catholic, Marie Miserowsky, whom Grete called Tetamama.
