Manchester Archives and Local Studies holds many collections of records - official, legal, religious, political, personal - relating to Manchester, both past and present. The official and public records relate specifically to the City of Manchester. The church records are drawn from a wider area owing to the Archive's status as Manchester Diocesan Record Office and also as a repository for the Manchester and Stockport Methodist District. In addition the Archive houses many private collections covering all walks of life.
The Archive is complemented by the Local Studies Library which has a large collection of printed material (including newspapers, photographs and maps) and additional sources for family history on microfilm.
Included in the Moving Here catalogue are photographs of the Manchester ship canal construction.
