Hackney Museum (HM)

Hackney Museum is a small but lively community museum. Our aim is to interpret Hackney's long tradition of immigration and settlement. In 1995 Hackney Museum closed its old building, a run down ex Methodist Hall, and ran a touring service for 5 years whilst its new home was developed. The museum's new building, the Technology and Learning Centre, opened in April 2002. The museum element of the building was fitted out with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. This included funding for new permanent displays on the theme of immigration and settlement in Hackney over the past 1000 years. The displays are very interactive with touch screen computer programmes, replica and real artefacts to touch, toys and games to play with.

Included in the Moving Here catalogue are objects from home in the West Indies.
