Croydon Museum and Heritage Service (CMHS)

Croydon Museum & Heritage Service manages three galleries at Croydon Clocktower. These are the Riesco Gallery of Chinese Pottery & Porcelain, a temporary exhibition gallery showing three major loan exhibitions each year on a broad variety of subjects from science to fine art, and the Lifetimes interactive museum of Croydon and Croydon People.

Lifetimes represents the history of Croydon since 1830. As well as traditional historical research, it is based on oral history interviews with over 300 Croydon people covering the span of living memory. Contributors to Lifetimes have lent or donated the objects on display and explain their personal significance through touch screen computers running multimedia presentations in the gallery. Lifetimes displays cover twenty-five life themes from birth to death and seek to represent the diversity of Croydon people throughout the period 1830-1995. Contributions to Moving Here will be made from the stories collected for the Lifetimes exhibition.

The Heritage Development Officer is also responsible for supporting a range of sustainable local heritage projects around the borough. These have included the restoration of Addington Palace, Shirley Windmill and Airport House Control Tower as well as many projects to involve local people in the history of Croydon. The service administers a small grants fund for local heritage projects and a local heritage plaque scheme.

Included in the Moving Here catalogue are photographs of Croydon area in the late 19th century.
